The History of Albania

Albania has a long history dating back to 4th century BC as found in some Greco-Roman records, however the history remained semi stagnant until the past century where things started to become more heated with the rise of communism in Slavic states.

Early 1900s

The Ottoman empire was vast and covered large portions of Slavic territories for many years. From the 15th century to 1912, Albania was part of the Ottoman Empire as part of the Rumelia province. After this, there were some issues with establishing political order. There was a monarchy that lasted a total of nine years ending in 1925 and shortly after, a three year republic followed by an 11 year monarchy.

World War II to present

After the 11 year monarchy ended in 1939, it was annexed by Fascist Italy and stayed that way until the collapse of the axis. Then, Albania became a communist state dubbed "The Socialists People Republic of Albania." In every communistic government, there is generally a ruler, and that ruler was Enver Hoxha. After his death, his successor watched the communist party fall apart, and in 1990 it was made a republic.

Since Albania was made a republic, it has faced many more trials and tribulations including the Kosovo war, economic crises and rebellions. In 2009, the country joined NATO, and is currently trying to gain membership to the European Union. The political unrest of the country has resulted in lots of speculation on the state of its future.
